Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:00:32 GMT

SEATTLE — Don’t look now, but the Minnesota Twins are hitting. This was the consensus issue with the Twins — anecdotally and statistically — when they stumbled into the all-star break with a three-game losing streak, a .232 team batting average and a half-game out of first place in the American League Central Division. With 71 games remaining and a division title firmly within its grasp, the team vowed to put together more good at-bats. The pitching, which featured one of the best starting rotations in the majors before the break, just had to continue apace. So far, so good.Alex Kirilloff went 3 for 4 with a triple, two-run home run and three runs scored, and rookie Edouard Julien went 3 for 5 with a home run and two runs scored, as the Twins beat the Seattle Mariners, 10-3, Tuesday in front of 28,141 at T-Mobile Park.Since starting a three-game series last Friday in Oakland, the Twins are hitting .301 with 11 home runs and averaging 6.6 runs a game. Not coincidentally, they’re 4...

Cory Starkey got the idea of neighbors putting their speed bumps and speed cones in the street to slow down traffic."I’ve made a makeshift speed bump out here; I’ve put cones out just to try to get the community to be aware that if you come through here, we’re going to slow you down," Starkey said. "They’re portable speed bumps they’re made out of rubber, so whenever the kids are out, I can drag them out, whenever the kids are in, I bring them back into the garage.” Clerk shot and killed at St. Louis City gas station He said he had some officials complain about the practice but said if they did it then they just can’t get action from O’Fallon."They were trying to get a stop sign. Group pushes to install BART gates faster

(KRON) – A Bay Area group of business leaders is demanding BART speed up its timeline to install security gates at its 50 stations. The Bay Area Council Group says data from their recent poll shows riders are staying away due to safety concerns and that gates are one way to drastically improve security throughout the system.  BART plans to have the gates installed by 2026. Officials say they are working hard on making the changes but moving faster may not be the answer. The council calls that timeline unacceptable.  Walnut Creek man arrested after teen fatally shot in botched robbery “We believe there is an urgency and BART needs to do whatever it can to accelerate the project and help keep unwanted elements out,” said Bay Area Council Group spokesperson Rufus Jeffries. Jeffries says the group of local businesses conducted a survey in May showing the primary reason riders have not returned en masse to BART is due to safety concerns. Low-key Kiwis: New Zealand slow to embrace Women’s World Cup

AUCKLAND, New Zealand (AP) — International visitors are greeted at the arrivals hall in Auckland’s airport by a display promoting the Women’s World Cup with such detail it includes carpeting resembling a soccer pitch. After that, though, the hype trails off. There are banners downtown and an occasional big-screen advertisement, but other than that, one of the globe’s major female sporting events could easily be missed. The tournament kicks off Thursday but seats for many games are still available. One day before the co-host nation faced Norway, many sports fans and media seemed more interested in analyzing New Zealand’s decisive 35-12 win in men’s rugby over South Africa before a sellout home crowd.“We’re a rugby-crazy country, and rugby is seen as our No. 1 sport. You haven’t always seen visibility in terms of being able to watch football on TV, exhibitions, women’s football,” New Zealand midfielder Annalie Longo said. “We’ve only just now got our first professional team here in New...

Abad picks up his first win in six years. Rockies beat Astros 4-3 as bullpen shines

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 04:00:32 GMT

DENVER (AP) — Fernando Abad barely remembers his last win or even who he was facing. It was that long ago.Abad picked his first victory in more than six years as the Colorado Rockies used a bullpen game featuring seven pitchers to beat the Houston Astros 4-3 on Tuesday night.“That (win) was a while ago,” said Abad, whose last victory was while he was with Boston on June 13, 2017, against Philadelphia. Back then, the left-handed reliever gave the baseball from the victory to his mom. He plans on giving this one to her as well. That is, once he locates it. For now, he will simply bask in the glow of the moment.“I just had to be able to do everything they needed me to do,” said Abad, who began his big-league career with the Astros. This had all the hallmarks of a high-scoring Coors Field affair when it was 3-3 after the first inning. But the pitching took over and the only run allowed after the early fireworks came courtesy of Ezequiel Tovar, who lined a shot off the fence in right-cent...
