COLUMBIA, Mo. – Two years after a horrific hazing incident left a University of Missouri-Columbia freshman blind and unable to talk or walk, 16 fraternities at the university have produced and released a video designed to reduce and prevent future tragedies. The video, called "Arm Yourself to Say No," will be shown to incoming pledges, fraternity members, officers, and other student groups during the fall semester.“Although aspects of the video are emotionally charged, the aim of the production is to effect a change in behavior among the groups to which it is targeted," said Bob Selsor, president of the Mizzou Greek Alliance. The 26-minute video shows the dangers of hazing and the consequences for those who participate in such behavior. The Mizzou Greek Alliance was formed in 2022 by 16 campus fraternities to enrich the experience of Greek student life, foster safe practices within the organizations, advocate campus-wide support for fraternities by modernizing their culture and promot...No rest for worked-over Broncos with Kansas City on deck Thursday night: “You have to dig deep. No rest for the weary and the wholly worked over. The Broncos, beat up and bruised to the tune of 234 yards rushing and a 31-21 home loss to the New York Jets, have a short work week before they board the charter late Wednesday to Kansas City.Waiting in the Central time zone, of course, is a Chiefs team featuring quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and, statistically speaking, the best defense Denver’s faced so far this season. The Chiefs opened this week as 10.5-point favorites and are once again off and running on a season that looks about as different from Denver’s as imaginable.“One of the things about this league is there’s nothing like winning,” Payton said Monday. “Obviously when you’re not having success, you have to dig deep. It’s difficult. It’s tough. You get up in the morning, it’s unpleasant, and yet, I think I have pretty good instincts relative to how to approach the team and how to guide the team relative to the next challenge.“And that’s what we’...Grizzlies are coming to town. After four dreary sequels, it’s about time someone put an end to the Exorcist franchise. The series kicked off with a delightful nightmare that turned heads around the country, but then came a string of misfires that weren’t so much scary as terrifyingly silly, which seems to be a common theme amongst horror classics. You thought Texas Chainsaw Massacre was spooky? Here comes four more installments that are far less effective. Director David Gordon Green tries to hide this franchise’s sequel/reboot skeletons in the closet with The Exorcist: Believer, but he ends up adding one more corpse to a mountainous pile. The film is a textbook example of how studios continue to churn out worthless reboots, taking game changers and stretching them into legacy sequels that bare none of the qualities that made the first entry a success. It doesn’t matter if the camera doesn’t glide, if the mood doesn’t chill or the art-house sensibilities are gone, as long as au...Ousted McCarthy positions himself as leader of riven GOP

By Lisa Mascaro and Kevin Freking | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Republicans have no clear idea who to elect U.S. House speaker, leaving an unprecedented power vacuum in Congress and severely limiting America’s ability to quickly respond to the crisis in Israel — or any number of other problems at home or abroad. On Monday, the ousted former speaker, Kevin McCarthy, quickly jumped into the void, bitterly criticizing President Joe Biden’s administration over the strength of its defense of Israel and positioning himself as a de facto Republican leader even though his colleagues toppled him from power. But it’s not at all clear if McCarthy could seriously make a comeback — or if any other Republicans seeking the gavel, Steve Scalise or Jim Jordan — can be elected speaker as their majority dissembles into infighting. House Republicans are scheduled to meet behind closed doors Monday evening to try to regain control of their majority ahead of possible speaker votes this w...Kaiser chops jobs in two East Bay cities and in Southern California
